Tina's September Message

Tribute to Anita ....

Anita Roddick, 64, died after suffering a major brain haemorrhage. Her husband, Gordon, and daughters, Sam and Justine, were all with her at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, England.

What a shock that was to me. I had only met the great lady 2 years ago.

Ms Roddick had revealed in February that she contracted hepatitis C through a blood transfusion while giving birth to a daughter in 1971, 5 years before she even opened her first Body Shop. In an interview at that time she said that she now had to get to know the currency of time.

Anita and her husband stepped down as co-chairmen of the company in 2002, although she still continued to contribute as a consultant. The Body Shop chain became a massive success selling "green" cosmetics as customers were becoming environmentally aware.

Adrian Bellamy, chairman of Body Shop International, said in a written statement: "All of us in The Body Shop family are deeply shocked and saddened to hear the news of Anita's passing... "But for everyone who knew Anita, it was about much more than that: you couldn't help but be inspired by her love of life, her vision of the world and her passion for changing it… It is no exaggeration to say that she changed the world of business with her campaigns for social and environmental responsibility.”

What an incredible legacy that is to leave behind.

I know she has been an inspiration to many women in business over the years and I am no exception. She was certainly a source of inspiration to me. I had the privilege of meeting her in 2005 at a women in business event we both presented at. I had lunch with her and I remember how she was genuinely interested in other women’s businesses. Considering how successful she was and how wealthy she had become, she was very down to earth and approachable. We even shared the same area for our respective book signings, although her queue of eager readers was much longer than my own. We exchanged books and even email addresses, saying that she always responded if people took the time to get in touch. And she did. She invited me to go along to see her in London, but our diaries never matched and we just didn’t get around to it.

Just goes to show how short life can be even for someone who deserved so much more time.

My message for you this month IS my tribute to Anita and just to say DO what you know you need to do in your heart; start a business; sack the boss; do that something for YOU before its too late! Life really is too short.
